The Disciple

Growing through community

About The Disciple

Timothy was young when Paul chose him, and he remained a learner throughout his ministry. He grew from tentative apprentice to trusted leader, from receiving instruction to giving it.

Timothy was raised in the faith by his grandmother Lois and mother Eunice. When Paul arrived and saw his potential, Timothy joined the apostle's mission. He learned by watching, by doing alongside, by being entrusted with increasing responsibility.

Timothy apparently struggled with timidity and self-doubt. Paul repeatedly encouraged him: 'Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young.' 'Fan into flame the gift of God which is in you.' Timothy needed these reminders.

Yet Timothy grew. By the end of Paul's life, he was trusted with serious responsibilities. The nervous young man had become a confident pastor. He never stopped learning, but he also stepped into his own calling.

Your Biblical Companion: Timothy

The Faithful Apprentice

Timothy grew from tentative apprentice to trusted leader. His journey shows that growth happens best in relationship, and that the learner eventually becomes the teacher.

2 Timothy 1:5

"I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also."

Your openness to mentorship is not dependence; it is wisdom.

2 Timothy 2:2

"And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others."

What you have learned is meant to be given away.

1 Timothy 4:12

"Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers."

There comes a time when the learner must trust what has been learned and lead.
